I really didn’t want to speak on the school shooting but man has my FB, instagram, Twitter lit up with blame this one blame that one. The reason we are sitting here in the position we are in is because it is much easier to blame someone for the problem than it is to accept responsibility. Yes the FBI failed to follow through, guardians failed to see subtle changes in behavior, and yes some friends may have even kept quiet about their suspicions. In the end everyone can take some blame because first these guns are on the streets, second schools are failing our children by labeling them problems and throwing them away, third this child had some serious issues that were either ignored or minimized. Expulsion is an important part of school discipline but where does that leave a child. You’re not good enough to be in school with your peers it must feel like you’re unworthy or disposable. Schools are so short funded that there are minimal programs available to address behavioral issues other than through the discipline pipeline which helps no one. Children are not to be accepted only if they fit the mold. Some kids don’t fit the mold but with help can be successful. I can’t help but imagine somewhere right now is a student who feels disenchanted with society, angry, vengeful and until we address these children there will be school shootings. They will turn to violence as the answer to their problems when they feel that no one cares or hears them. The students who survived the most recent school shooting in Florida are telling us how they feel maybe we should take a minute and listen to them. I feel we owe them that much.
